We all play the character we create for ourselves —sometimes without even realizing it—by using or deconstructing prevailing clichés. The images of our culture shape us just as we, in turn, shape the imagery of our culture.

It is precisely within this back-and-forth that artists, fully aware of their power to represent, have long played a key role in deconstructing and demonstratively unveiling prejudices and taboos. Some go so far as to fictionalize their everyday lives—or even to lay bare on canvas their fantasies or collective heresies.

Through her personal selection of the most compelling works from the Kunsthalle, Joy Stick invites you to witness the voices of artists most deeply committed to the cause of women and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. In doing so, she calls upon us to vehemently condemn—and cast shame upon the grave — of those who continue to warm up and serve the same filth and aesthetic dogmas of their time.

With an instinctive yet thoughtful approach, Joy Stick invites you to render visible the blur that resides in the reading of images—an essential ambiguity that feeds both interpretation and discussion.

Joy Stick :

Graduated from Visual and Media Arts School at Université du Québec in Montréal, Joy Stick reads images through the eyes of a creator. In other words, she judges the cracks in her makeup as harshly as those in Renaissance masterpieces. Her love for her contemporaries will not allow her to forget the impact of the Guerrilla Girls’ intervention at the MK&G Hamburg—for she knows too well that the history of art has long discriminated against diversities, following a sexist timeline drawn by the dominant actors and institutions of the field.

Having recently settled in Hamburg, she is offering guided tours of the Kunsthalle in English or French. She will also be making a few appearances this autumn at Bar 439 in Hamburg. Joy has led several independent projects with a variety of publics, and draws on the context surrounding her to nourish her inner creature.

I am taking part to a talk in Hannover on July 19th and participate to a group performance in public space with PAE Aktionslabor verein at the event Kunst umgehen!

Les couloirs jaunes, où l'écho précède la voix

I had the privilege of doing the graphic design of 🎗Les couloirs jaunes, où l'écho précède la voix 🌞, a book edited by Stéphane Gilot and Emmanuelle Choquette. The book features a series of texts — in English and French— photos and excerpts from literary works that plunge you into these dreamlike corridors that have generated so many echoes.

Artists : Caroline Boileau, d'Hanna Sybille Müller, d'Alisha Piercy, Stéphane Gilot and Diego Gil participated in the project with drawings, installations and performances.
